Conference of the Birds Talk

Farid al-Din Attar’s (d. ca. 1221) The Conference of the Birds is one of the masterpieces of Persian mystical literature. It tells the allegorical tale of a flock of birds who, guided by the hoopoe, set out on a perilous journey through seven valleys in search of their king, the Simurgh. Each valley symbolizes a stage on the spiritual path, culminating in the revelation that the Simurgh is none other than the birds themselves – a vision of unity, self-discovery, and the Divine within.

This lecture will introduce Attar and his legacy, explore the symbolic depth of The Conference of the Birds, and highlight how this extraordinary poem continues to inspire across cultures – offering audiences a meditation on longing, loss, community, and the shared human search for transcendence.
