Myths, Movement and Mindfulness at NMS

Free admission for all on Fridays and Saturdays from 7pm to midnight from 21 August to 5 September

In this year’s Singapore Night Festival, the National Museum of Singapore invites you to explore the island’s rich tapestry of myths, legends and folklore in ways that are playful, meaningful and deeply personal.

From crafting charms inspired by the creatures of the Museum’s multimedia installation Singapore Odyssea: A Journey Through Time, and nourishing body and soul with food and movement, to embarking on a storytelling adventure – there is something for everyone.

Each experience is designed to connect visitors to the stories and beliefs that have shaped Singapore’s diverse communities, while offering a moment to slow down and be present.

Photographs taken during the programmes may be used in the Museum’s publicity materials.

Mindful Bites: Food & Movement

Discover the legends of Singapore in this unique workshop that blends cultural storytelling, light yoga and wholesome snacks.

The experience begins with a gentle yoga session inspired by local folktale heroes such as Sang Nila Utama and Badang. Thereafter, participants will prepare healthy snacks infused with Asian ingredients like turmeric, ashwagandha and blue pea. The workshop concludes with a mindful makan session to savour these creations while discovering practical, sustainable eating habits.

Mythical Breaths & Tales

A Whale of a Tale Playground, Level 1

SGD 10 per child, to be refunded upon attendance. Recommended for children aged 5 to 9 years.

Dive into a world of myths and legends at the Museum’s A Whale of a Tale Playground – and experience an enchanting session of storytelling, movement and mindfulness.

As a mythical tale unfolds, participants will move through the playground structures, guided by a facilitator. Along the way, they will learn simple breathing techniques and mindful movements that draw inspiration from the storyline, including deep whale breaths and flowing river movements.

Children must be accompanied by an adult. In the event of inclement weather, the programme will be shifted to Get Curious Studio at Level 3.

Tales of Earth and Sea – A Projection Mapping by The Fox, The Folks

Experience a striking projection mapping installation that reinterprets local folklore through a dialogue between land and water.

Illuminating the iconic facade of the National Museum of Singapore, this work presents myth and history as mirrors of each other and reframes legends as living processes: carried by waves, grounded in the earth, and renewed wherever people gather.

Accompanying the stunning visuals is an original soundtrack produced by Singapore’s Artusik in collaboration with UiTM Malaysia.

[Drop-in craft] Luck & Charm

Design a charm inspired by the animals featured in the Singapore Odyssea exhibition – some of which have been associated with protection and good luck. Visitors will learn about the fascinating myths that have shaped the beliefs of Singapore’s diverse communities for generations.

Our Favourite Haunts: Through the Lens of Migrant Workers

Now in its fourth edition, the Migrant Workers Photography Festival (MWPF) invites you to view Singapore through the eyes of its migrant community. With over 100 submissions, this year’s exhibition is themed Our Favourite Haunts.

Inspired by the dual meaning of “haunt”, the works showcase scenes of community and belonging alongside wistful, otherworldly portraits – offering a fresh and intimate perspective on the spaces we share.
