“Chinese Dance Fiesta” is a nationwide outreach programme that aims to strengthen the camaraderie among the local Chinese dance community while fostering a deeper level of appreciation for Chinese dance within the larger community.
This year, audiences can look forward to 9 performances prepared by SCDT, performers from Singapore institutions, local Chinese dance groups, as well as a collaboration between SCDT and Dua Space Dance Theatre from Malaysia, whom SCDT had specially invited to be part of this year’s performance lineup.
Apart from dance performances, participants of the event can also look forward to Dance Masterclasses on Chinese Han-Tang Classical Dance, Contemporary Chinese Dance and Yao Ethnic Folk Dance, as well as Dance Talk & Demonstration sessions on Chinese Han-Tang Classical Dance and Yao Ethnic Folk Dance.

Dance Masterclass: Chinese Han-Tang Classical Dance

Chinese Han-Tang classical dance was created in 1979 by the late Professor Sun Ying of the Beijing Dance Academy, China. The dance style is inspired by the music and dance of the Han and Tang dynasties as well as the ideology of traditional Chinese opera in the Ming and Qing dynasties, showcasing the unique beauty of Chinese culture.
This dance masterclass will be conducted by Ms Liu Jia, an experienced instructor who teaches at the School of Continuing Education of the Beijing Dance Academy, China. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Chinese Classical Dance as well as a Master’s degree of Fine Art.
This masterclass is brought to you in partnership with the NAFA School of Dance.

Dance Masterclass: Contemporary Chinese Dance

The movement language of contemporary Chinese dance represents a modern reinterpretation of traditional dance routines. It emphasises creativity and expression, often blending elements of modern dance. Instead of merely depicting traditional dance scenes, contemporary Chinese dance delves deeper into the emotions and stories that reflect the lives of contemporary people. This approach aims to break away from convention and integrate innovative elements while staying true to the essence of Chinese dance.
This dance masterclass will be conducted by Dua Space Dance Theatre Co-Founder and Managing Director Mr Anthony Meh. Anthony graduated from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts major in dance. He was an Ex-professional dancer in Taiwan Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and GGD Dance Company in New York, USA. Participants are guided to experience the dynamic changes that breathing brings to the body, to feel the connection between their bodies and the space in which they move, and discover the relationship between movement and soul.

Dance Masterclass: Yao Ethnic Folk Dance

The Yao people have lived in the mountains and forests for a long time, making a living by farming and hunting. As a result, the dance of the Yao people is closely related to hunting, farming and religious offerings. The movements of the Yao dance reflect the hardworking, courageous and positive attitude towards life of the Yao people. The main types of Yao dances include “long drum dance”, “bronze drum dance” and “Tao drum dance”.
This dance masterclass will be conducted by Ms Shao Ziwen, Deputy Head of Dance of Singapore Raffles Music College (Dance Faculty). She graduated with a Bachelor of Dance from Minzu University of China in 2012 and obtained her Master in Dance (Choreography) from Minzu University of China in 2015.
